SOCCO is proud to introduce the Mike V.
Barnyard collection Socks for Street Plant. 25 years ago, World Industries released the Mike Vallely Barnyard “double kick” deck. It was the first professionally endorsed symmetrically shaped deck, and the first to rattle street skaters out of resigned complacency with scaled-down vert shapes. Designed by Rodney Mullen, bankrolled by Steve Rocco and ridden in a legendary video edit by Mike Vallely, the Barnyard is the universally acknowledged forerunner of the modern, elliptical “popsicle stick” shape, and one of the most important deck designs in the history of skateboarding.
The Barnyard’s eye-catching art, which was both a stylistic departure from the deck art of the time as well as a strong personal statement for Mike Vallely, would turn out to be nearly as influential as its shape. Created by Mark Mckee, the graphic, which featured a cavalcade of cartoonish farm animals frolicking free in the eponymous barn yard, was both a reference to George Orwell’s novel Animal farm, and an expression of Vallely’s strongly held belief in vegetarianism and animal rights.
We are stoked to be producing this Street Plant/SOCCO original and look forward the next model in the lineup.

MY RULES by Glen E Friedman is amazing.
About This Book
The definitive monograph of Glen E. Friedman, a pioneer of skate, punk, and hip-hop photography, including much never-before-published work. Glen E. Friedman is best known for his work capturing and promoting rebellion in his portraits of artists such as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, The Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C., and Public Enemy, as well as classic skateboarding originators such as Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan “Ollie” Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta, and a very young Tony Hawk. Designed in association with celebrated street and graphic artist Shepard Fairey, this monograph captures the most important and influential underground heroes of skateboarding, punk, and hip-hop cultures. My Rules is an unprecedented window into the three most significant countercultures of the last quarter of the twentieth century, and Friedman’s photographs define those important movements that he helped shape. A remarkable chronicle and a primer about the origins of radical street cultures, My Rules is also a statement of artistic inspiration for those influenced by these countercultures.

One of the major factors for the mid 1970′s era that SOCCO78 represents is being played out again in Southern California today. One of the most severe droughts in history began in 1975 and we are seeing the same effects today to the environment and society with the current drought. Johnny Socco was 13 in 1978, growing up in Redondo Beach at that time there were several cultural shifts that brought together a perfect storm for the SO-Cal lifestyle that is still influencing today’s styles in music, art, design and action sports. Skateboarding as a sport and culture was brought together in this 1975-78 period of severe drought with the simple fact that so many pools were left empty and made available for trespassing riders to practice their tricks. From these suburban backyard pools to the asphalt streets that connected them, this was the place that created the legendary Dogtown and Z-Boys skateboarders. With their long hair, free spirits, tube socks and Vans, these young and rebellious wheel warriors ruled the Southern California landscape. Hugh Holland really captured this progression of both the sport and the youth culture that drove the style in his book LOCALS ONLY. LOCALS ONLY features more than 120 beautiful color images plus a Q+A format interview with the artist. Groovy!
